It is clear that the Internet of Things presents great opportunities as well as technical and commercial challenges.  The Innovation Catalyst and its partners are running HackIoT to allow students, entrepreneurs and professionals to;

  • Understand the technology
  • Work together to develop proof of concept products/solutions
  • Explore and try to understand potential commercial models

LoRaWAN IoT technology with its IoT standard, low-cost implementation, rapid scalability and cost-effective operations will underpin much IoT developments.

We have assembled a team of industry experts to provide technology advice and training and will be providing the necessary hardware, developer kits, sensors and gateways to allow for meaningful product development experience to be gained during the HackIoT.

Reading Borough Council will shortly be rolling out an LPWAN to Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell and West Berkshire and allocating £1m of challenge funding to developers of IoT products and services.  HackIoT provides the perfect opportunity to start creating propositions that can apply for this cash. 

The overall winner of HackIoT will have a place at the Innovation Catalyst on the 4 month Barclays Flight Smart City Accelerator programme.  Other HackIoT particaptns can apply for 1 of the 12 places on this programme to get the help they might need to develop their businesses further.

Solve the challenges

There will Smart City themed challenges that will be set according to the demand from teams and sponsors these are likely to cover areas such as;

  • Connected Environment - env montoring, flood risk....
  • Connected Home  - health, energy, maintenance....
  • Connected transport – cars, public, logistics....

HackIoT will be open to individuals and teams so get involved

  • If you are interested in Internet of Things technology. (No experience required).
  • If you are on a team, at a start-up or in an enterprise setting, that is aggressively pursuing IoT applications. 
  • If you are interested in devices, sensors, modules, network servers APIs and application servers.
  • If you are interested in integrating IoT hardware and software, join us. (Background in any hardware or software is welcome.)

You will take a package of IoT hardware and software and create solutions to meet the challenge

We'll get you up to speed with new technologies and create applications that interact with sensors. 

You will leave with greater understanding of the technologies involved, end-to-end IoT solutions, data and workflow and perhaps a fledgling business

  • Teams Size - Teams must not exceed more than 4 members
  • Prize Eligibilty & Awards- Only Projects that integrate the full ​_​_hardware/software tech stack (devices, LoRaWAN network, Microshare Platform) will be eligible


Individuals attending will be placed in teams.  We will expect teams to present a solution to a challenge and a business case at the end of HackIoT in a 3min presentation.  You will present your open source* LoRaWAN IoT project to judges, that will be shared with global IoT houses. (* open source using the standard MIT License)


Will the hackathon venue be available to hackers overnight?

  • The Innovation Catalyst will be open for overnight hacking so please plan accordingly.

Everyone attending HackIoT must register for this event at HackIoT Reading Smart City  to reserve your spot.  We will place individuals into teams of 3.  The event will be limited to 27 teams.  If you are in a team please register as individuals and make sure you fill in the team name field.  There will be a waiting list so if you register and can't attend please unregister so that your fellow hackers can attend.  You also need to register here on this dev post site - button/link top right.

Judging Criteria

  • Technology
    Projects must integrate the full hardware/software stacks: Microshare, SODAQ Explorer device, LoRaWAN, The Things Network
  • Commercial
    A valid business proposition and commercial rationale should be explained
  • Market
    An attempt should be made to identify and indicate the scale of the market opportunity - Who will one day pay and why.
